Skinny Watch

Different approaches to ultra thin watches. JLC MUT 34 @ 5.3mm and Citizen Eco Drive One @ 3.1mm. ...

What watch?

 By: mdg : March 16th, 2024-01:41

Citizen Eco Drive One.

ROFL. You!!!

Good one.

My tube light just turned on 😀

I had that JLC MUT years ago.

Now you have me curious to go look at the Citizen. I like thin watches up to a point, beyond which they seem too delicate. I really admire the design and craft that goes into making thin movements. ...

Nice JLC.

I agree, I think at some point everyday wear comes into question due to the delicate/ and thinness of the movement, A day at the office, dinner or a formal/semiformal event would be quite fine.

These are both quite robust.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-05:01
Both have 5 atm water resistance despite the thinness, and unlike ultra thin watches of the past, they can worn daily without any issue at all.

The VC is on my list.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-14:04

The one with the gold movement.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-14:11
Like all things Richemont these days, best purchased pre-loved, so hoping to find one at the right price.

When I called the MUT and similar thin watches delicate, I was thinking more of the perception they give of being very fine but less substantial.

Being delicate doesn't make them fragile and prone to failure with use. But getting really thin can require design compromises that you wouldn't see in a more robust sport watch for example.

Now that's thin! ;)

 By: amanico : March 16th, 2024-08:57

Yes, the JLC is manual wind.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-14:05

There is something calming about a simple? Thin 2-hand watch.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-14:08
Here’s my other extreme, a veritable tuna can. 5 Citizens or 3 JLCs would fit in this case, but I like this for other reasons as it is evokes a pocket watch repurposed for the wrist and the diameter to height ratio is just right. ...

Comfy

When my thin watch came in, the question why i had collected so many thick watches? Winding my thin watch is not that problem, while the crown stil have enough grip and it is not too micro. The question even more strong why i collected many thick watches....

Agree. The JLC is very well designed.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-14:14
Good crown grip with no problem winding or setting the watch. It doesn’t feel delicate.

Than the JLC is a winner

A great watch to put on my wishlist. I like thin watches made for eternity.

It is an eco drive movement.

Solar powered, so no need to change batteries and because it has only 2 hands, no ticking hand to belie a quartz heart. Calibre 8826 is only 1.0mm thick so pretty amazing for a rechargeable movement. It really is quite impressive, I only wish they had mad...

+1!! (nt)

NT

That’s a top ultra thin.

I had no idea Omega played in this genre!

Once they did.....

 By: lm6 : March 16th, 2024-14:37

Me either. ;)

 By: amanico : March 16th, 2024-16:33

Not bad!

 By: amanico : March 16th, 2024-16:33

Merci!

 By: lm6 : March 16th, 2024-16:38

Piaget do this pretty well too.

 By: Timeout : March 16th, 2024-14:48
...

Good one.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-15:04
My preference for ultra thin watches is to keep the diameter down below 35-36mm. What diameter is the Piaget?

The diameter is 38mm.

 By: Timeout : March 16th, 2024-15:40
I guess the design requires this as the trains are all on the same plane as the dial. In addition it has to accommodate a mainspring to provide the 48 hour power reserve. The case is 3.65mm thick which is pretty amazing for a traditional manual Swiss-leve...

That makes sense.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-16:12
So they went horizontal to squeeeze the vertical thickness down.

Incredible, I really like these ultra-thin and elegant watches.

 By: clemens m : March 16th, 2024-19:18
Today you have to really look hard for watches like that. Most manufacturers go the easy route, they produce "dress" watches with a diameter of 39mm, 8mm tall and call them ultra "thin"...

I agree. And they make ultra thin watches too large (in diameter) when they do.

 By: Horo_Traveler : March 16th, 2024-19:25
Once the diameter gets over 34-36mm, the proportions look off for a thin watch.

100% true, this is why

 By: clemens m : March 16th, 2024-19:40
(neo)vintage watches are so much more desirable when it fomes to elegant and simple designs. Simple without being boring.
