The "Roger Chaffee" Timex Electric

Being a big fan of early electric watches, as well as watches in Space exploration history, I had to seek out an example of a lesser-known watch worn by an astronaut, Roger Chaffee, this Timex Electric.

Certainly a tragic story, and I remember that day well, when I was a kid in 60's. It shows you what unknowns exist in the development of space travel and how brave these pioneers were (and still are).

Roger Chaffee was one of the third group of astronauts chosen by NASA in October 1963. He was named to the Apollo 1 crew in March 1966 and that would have been his first flight. On January 27, 1967, a flash fire broke out in the sealed command module during a training exercise. All three crew members on board, Grissom, White, and Chaffee, were tragically killed before workmen could free them. The B&W photo of the three astronauts during training in the spacecraft with this watch clearly shows on Chaffee's wrist.

His watch and his gold wedding band were returned to his family after the accident.

. . . but no longer; perhaps it's an update issue. Safari has never been a problem. If you still can't upload pics, please send them over to my e-mail account. I'll add them in to your post. Best, Art
