Bagan, in Myanmar

It is an incredible place built from the XI to the XIII century, after the King of Northern Myanmar conquered the South where Buddhism had already gotten and so he discovered it and converted to Buddhism.
So he took the leading Buddhist lama and took him to Bagan, where everybody converted to Buddhism and started building temples and pagodas like crazy. About 10000 where built of which 2000 remain.
Later, it was invaded by the Mongolians and then largely abandoned. So the remains have been fairly well kept, as you may see in the photo.
The area is not too large. Seeing 2000 temples in such a small place is not far from magical. Especially when watched from a balloon!
