My intent is not to start this week's Wristscan with controversy or to offend anyone.
However, whenever I hear the word "Heavy" it generates a bit of a melancholic / thoughtful mood.
So immediately this story came to mind which is one of the most awkward moments I've ever had while wearing a watch.
I was visiting a friend's house for brunch a few years past. This was a good friend from high school that I had reconnected with after losing touch for almost 20 years.
When I arrived I was wearing my newest watch.
A limited edition Wempe Fliegeruhr.
During brunch my friend excused himself from the table because his grandfather was awake and he wanted to bring him outside to dine with us. About 5 minutes later, he returned pushing a frail man in a wheel chair. I stood up, extended my hand to help, but the grandfather slapped my hand away. Initially I thought he was a proud man who didn't need any assistance but when I introduced myself, he didn't pay any attention to me and ignored the introduction completely.
My friend was shocked at this "act of rudeness" and he asked his grandfather to explain. The grandfather pointed to my watch and then he rolled up his sleeves and showed me a tattoo on his left arm... I had no idea what the connection was until my friend explained that the tattoo was his grandfather's Auschwitz serial number. Since WW2, this man did not associate with anything German...and my watch was very offensive to him.
I immediately removed the watch and placed it out of sight. It took a few more visits before his grandfather would even turn his eyes towards me when I spoke.
So the Wempe Fligerurhr is my "heaviest" watch. It caused me to reflect quite a bit on history and the unintended consequences of my watch wearing habits.
Looking forward to your "happier" contributions,
Mike
