Vintage daily-wearer
Jul 01, 2013,04:59 AM
It just occurred to me that so often what I love in vintage world is finding a piece that is both vintage AND wearable as a daily-wearer. Take my 5508 Sub, for example. I love the watch in so many ways. It is a classic vintage piece. However, I would not feel comfortable wearing it every day and exposing it to the elements....sea, rain or whatever. My recent post on Rolex Forum looked at the 16660 as what I consider to be the perfect transition model between vintage and modern....vintage enough (30 years old) to have vintage Rolex DNA, but modern enough with its sapphire crystal and upgraded movement to withstand daily use and wear-and-tear. I am curious...across other manufacturers.....what is your view on the perfect vintage daily-wearer?

it's a Rolex! Why wouldn't you take the watch in water, or wear in the rain? The watch is or should be the epitome of toughness. I don't follow vintage pricing, but are these vintage watches too expensive to justify basically normal (Rolex) wear? Are coll...

I think the point I love about the 16660 is that it has all the trappings of a modern watch, but is actually 30 years old. As for being so pricey...well, I think the price of a 16660 could easily be found at levels comparable with a new Submariner. So, if...
i have several that would qualify as daily wearers

It's all about spare parts. To wear a vintage and potentially exclusive is nice but what happens, and believe me it happens, if you hit a wall with your vintage? I had several "unique" watches but I was not comfortable wearing any as a day-to-day wearer. ...

Even Omega, that is very popular here, has some parts that are scarce. Few weeks back, I helped another friend sourcing parts for his beloved Speedmaster 321 and he lives in US. Cheers, Nilo

I love to chase a watch but I'm not keen of parts hunt. A friend got a triple six in regular shape but the dial. He is still chasing and the few he could locate costs the ransom of a king! As I stated, it depends where you are. Cheers, Nilo

Those old watches are tough; go ahead and wear them.

Parts are available for Rolex, and if you don't wear a sports model you don't have to worry about messing up the bezel insert. Old IWCs can take care of themselves, and (when last I had it done) IWC did not charge an unreasonable price for refurbishing. A...

I was thinking about precisely this issue recently, when I looked at my regular rotation, and realised that my beaters were all from the early 1950s. I work in an office (mostly) and try to ensure that I don't abuse them, but I did wonder about ageing. Of...

......some of mine I just cannot wear for everyday. Take the 6610, the radium is notoriously fragile and easy to fracture. When I wear my 6610, I do so with a lot of care and certainly not when it could be exposed to any water. I cannot call it a daily we...

While I am happy to wear all my vintage watches for different occasions. The question of what I would turn to for a daily wearer is slightly different. I think Nilo raised perhaps the most important question for me which is spare parts and servicability. ...
