In fact,

when I look at the normal Perpetual Calendar (let's say 5139 or 5940) and a normal chronograph from the brand (5170), I noticed we come roughly to a  Chrono Perpetual Calendar reference (5270) tag.

Hence when I see the difference of 5370 versus 5204, it is a bargain!

Anyway, I'm joking it is quite a margin but I thought that the logic would have made the gap twice bigger.

Of course the fantastic black enameled dial reduces the gap a little bit, especially as black ones are very hard to make perfect as I wrote earlier. The impurities are more visible than on white surfaces.

The 5078 is yet another story. But so appealing...

I'm sure you'll take your time as you always do. They are both amazing pieces, even compared to the other brands and deserve both to be in your hands one day or another.

Cheers, Mark

[Anniversary Year] 20 years - Split-second Chronograph with Perpetual Calendar - The 5004

By: Mark in Paris : July 23rd, 2015-14:57
Gentlemen, In 1995, Patek Philippe unveiled a new reference, the 5004 . It was a very complicated piece with Split-second chronograph and Perpetual calendar functions based on the Nouvelle Lemania caliber. This caliber CHR 27-70 Q (30 x 8.86mm) was equipp...

They are beautiful watches

and I also like the new 5204 black dial version. But in the end, the 3/9 registers really balances the watch for me. I don't care as much for the lowered registers. Just a personal preference. Best Joe

I usually don't have that much difficulties to decide which one I like

comparing an old reference and its replacing one but here I must say I don't know. Of course I prefer the new movement but concerning the face side, they are really both beautiful. 5204 Black dial And here it is with a 5270's movement: They really have co...

I tried the 5204r in Geneva, and it is with no doubt :

The best caliber I have ever had in hands! So deep. So lively. And the r makes it very elegant. ...

The 29-535 in the 5170/5270 is gorgeous and wonderfully decorated and finished

I didn't remember that

That's quite a figure, I wonder how they'll do with this year's piece? This 5004 was in Ti and had a very specific dial. The Onlywatch 2015 is a Triple complication but more classical in its outfit (except it is made of Steel). Thanks Gordon! Cheers, Mark...

for the posting on 5004. For me, my 5204 white dial is my current favorite Patek watch I own. I tried on the 5004 first several variants before deciding and the watch proportions were not for me. Much too small on MY wrist and much too tall. It's a nice w...

This is often an element which helps make the decision

The new proportions are something we are much more used to nowadays. I'd love to see a picture of your 5204 in the wild one day! By the way, the movement is stunning. Cheers, Mark

Here you go Mark. My favorite version of the split second. ...

Yes, that is it, ntaural colors and "live" atmosphere

I think this is the way I like looking at watch pictures: thank you for the wristshot! Glad you're the happy owner of such a complicated Patek (which also mean normal-sized.... as a complicated piece should try to be, IMHO) Cheers, Mark

Especially when one is particularly attracted by this beautiful brand

I was surpised to see that the 5204 and 5370 are not that far away from one another in terms of price. It would be a much tougher choice than I thought. Thank you Kari :) Cheers, Mark

Not far away?

 By: dr.kol : July 24th, 2015-08:33
Something around 40k away. It's the price of a car... Anyhow, for me this is not so difficult: First of all, the dial of 5370 is in my eyes superior. Secondly, the perpetual module adds the price with 40k - that's pretty hefty. Thirdly, the case of 5370 i...

It's quite an achievement. Yes, both would be an ideal solution. I will order the other in a bit over two weeks and if the business looks in a year as good as it looks now, I will order the other one. But luckily I can also survive by getting only one mor...

And thanks for the 5K tag Kari! Cheers, Mark

Small, thick, but full of charm. That was a nice reference.

 By: amanico : July 24th, 2015-21:29
I heard that Patek had big issues to make the split seconds reliable, on the 5004. Rumor or fact? Good idea, this post! Best, Nicolas

I heard the same thing. I believe it was on the earlier ones released but not 100% certain.

Thanks, El 1125. [nt]

I must say I'm quite appealed by these proportions

By: Mark in Paris : July 25th, 2015-03:36
At the beginning the "hamburger" shape was really not my thing. But the more I saw the 3970 for instance or this 5004 in pictures I feel the charm indeed. Concerning the reliability, I don't know, but I heard about there was a possible "update" during ser...

Yes, it was an beautiful and important reference for Patek

Ti must have been much lighter :)

Very nice. A technical marvel. An aesthetic beauty.

I particularly like the steel version. Being a chrono it is also a watch with a function that is also sporty , hence the steel version fits or suits the watch nicely. My opinion. Thanks for highlighting this patek mark. Cheers Geross

It is very modern and casual that way indeed

By: Mark in Paris : September 12th, 2015-08:55
The only interrogation I have is that the strap looks a little "plastic" like on the picture. Thank you Geross :) Cheers, Mark

Yes, I think that Patek has quite well managed to travel through the different eras of watchmaking. This 5004 is a very interesting reference. Cheers, Mark
