Hi kpk, I don't believe that is a compass....

....rather it is a compass bezel. So no magnets involved.

You can use your watch to determine North by aiming it at the sun.

In the Northern Hemisphere; you aim the hour hand at the sun, then by halving the angle between the hour hand and 12o'clock, you get the N-S axis.

In the Southern Hemisphere, it's the other way around; you point the 12 at the sun and halve the angle between this and the hour hand to find the N-S axis.

So with this watch, you probably use the Compass bezel to (semi) accurately position North after performing the above. You can then use the compass bezel to determine bearings.

Unfortunately, near the Equator, as you are in Singapore, this method (using the sun) is very inaccurate.

Hi Great shots. The only downside is they're adding fuel to the fire of me wanting one! Cheers JML

Thank you guys for the responses. Two more questions:

- In the model with compass; how does the magnet not affect the movement? - Does Seiko manage to keep prices down because of economies of scale? What if these were Swiss watches? Would their prices be a lot more?
