First of all, many thanks to AndrewD for giving me the honour and trust to do the judgment for the WOTW. As it happens, I’m in the fortunate position not only to judge the watch of the week but can also consider the combination with some dream car. I understand, this week we have a special judgment on Car+Watch combo, but for the WOTW, I simply need to consider the theme as well.
Now I have been thinking about the best judgment criteria that meet the theme of “watches and cars” and I developed a little theory on similarities between characters of watches and cars and I have been looking for whom did the best match overall while foremost considering the watch.
There was (still is) a fashion to co-brand watches and cars, like Ferrari with GP or now Panerai and Hublot, or Mercedes and IWC or Breitling and Bentley, but I’m not looking at these kinds of combinations, I look more to the character of a watch and the matching character of the car and possibly the personality of the owner.
Wouldn’t you agree that:
A sophisticated Minute Repeater or Tourbillon belongs into a Roll’s or Bentley?
Here are my thoughts on some good matching combos:
Classic, elegant dress watch in precious metal: S-Class or similar
High-tech ceramic or carbon sports watches (RM or AP ROO): Supercars (Lambo, Ferrari)
Sports Chronos belonging to sports/performance cars
Bracelet sports watches (Nautilus, VC Overseas): Sports Coupe/GT cars
Diver watches matching to SUVs
A massive bling bling watch in the ultimate poser car (that Brabus G or Hummer H1)…uhg, shiver
Vintage watches matched with classic cars (my fav combo!)
Timeless design classics (art deco) like a Reverso, I would love to see in a timeless car design like an E-Type (I had that thought before I made my judgment!)
So here is my judgment:
AndrewD: while I really love the F.P. Journe of yours in front of the dashboard, I need to disqualify you for 3 reasons (not exactly seriously meant):
As the thread initiator
The Boxster
You seem to have the Steering wheel misplaced to the wrong side in your car.
I for long fell in love with the photo from Noodia with the S.F Heuer with the Ferrari GT in the background, but in the end the winner this week is TGH with his fantastic Jaeger Reverso in combination with a classic Jag dashboard dial.
Congrats and perhaps you can honour us with a photo of the Jag in full.
Best,
CC
