Hi blomman, here is my long-winded verdict:

* * *

I’m honored to have been selected as StaticJudge this week and humbled that I am to judge others’ photos when, despite being on ThePurists for over a decade, I have yet to post a single photo.

The genesis of what drives our passion for watches, and the impulse behind the acquisition of a particular timepiece, is interesting to me.

When I think “Happy Watches” I wonder if the impulse to buy is pure hedonism and acquisitiveness, or the desire for a memento to mark a milestone in life such as the birth of a child, an important birthday, a marriage (a divorce?!?), or attaining some other significant goal. I almost always use one of my life’s milestones as the impetus to buy. So for me, my Happy Watches are associated with important moments in my life. But frankly, I think more hedonic impulse purchases are in order!

This week’s submissions were excellent, and choosing was difficult.

--Blomman started it off with, among others, a pristine vintage Omega Seamaster 300 on a bed of black tropic straps.

--Nilo gave us some exquisite shots of his trademark black-dialed beauties.

--Nicolas offered up some very compelling shots of the legendary Polaris, my favorite being his composition with the bird’s nest—something precious lies there.

--Cazalea submitted the ultimate Happy Watch—an exuberantly colorful piece with happy faces on the hands and dial itself.

--HS111 and I seem sympatico in associating watches with events and friendships, and he offered up a quartet of vintage examples and commentary.

--CrownComfort, in the same vein, submitted a watch dear to his heart because it was a gift to his daughter. I will do the same one day with my own daughter and son.
[This one I can't resist showing 1. it is a GP, 2. because of what it represent for CC and his daughter]

--Joe/4JS gave us a stunning hedonic duet. I want to be more like Joe someday.

--Pplater displayed his wonderful Speake-Marin Shimoda (among others) and offered some poignant sentiments associated with that piece in particular.

I haven’t touched on many other worthy submissions—but they are no less worthy, and I commend all participants for their excellent submissions and heart-felt sentiments.

The one that moved me the most, and this week’s winner, is Ken’s photo of his Haldiman H1, for its association with the earlier days of ThePurists, the brilliant horology embodied within, and Ken’s implicit sentiments, which reflect my own—that watches aren’t merely mechanical wonders or toys or soulless objects; they aren’t merely hedonism expressed in an expensive objet d’art; instead, for many of us, they are deeply associated with, and inspire our nostalgia for, life’s joys, accomplishments and friendships.

My thanks to ThePurists team for selecting me as StaticJudge this week.

Cheers,
John

Thank you very much, John - excellent choice!
Congrats Ken!
smile

Best
Blomman
