A tricky question
Feb 06, 2015,01:27 AM
My favourite dial colour? Hard to tell. When I started with watches I had a preference for black dials. Readability of white hands on a clean black dial is just unbeatable:
Then I noticed that it got a little too monochromatic in my watch box. And even though black dials still jumped at me I forced myself to turn my attention to different possibilities in style, colour and maybe even material.
And when it came across my way I decided to give this one a try:
An undiscovered country for me: Yellow gold, light grey dial (a limited edition of 20 commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall), not sporty at all.
It was a gamble (at least for my conservative way to buy watches). And indeed it took me years before I really appreciated the gold/grey combination, but now I do not want to miss this watch any more.
Next I wanted get a more business style watch because I felt that this was a gap in my box. For this my preference shifted to light coloured dials.
This one convinced my thoroughly:
A great watch to wear in the office. Even if contrast is sometimes a little low this silver dial with silver hands, silver indexes an the clue second hand breathes a lot of elegance.
And then thunder struck me when I saw this in the metal:
I just had to get it. The Reverso Rouge is just amazing. How a dial can be daring and elegant at the same time is unbelievable. This is real artistry on the manufacture's side. It is so simple and sophisticated at the same time. It is like a singer singing alone or just along with a piano: If you do it the simple way you have to do it absolutely right because there is nothing you can hide behind. La Grande Maison definitely did here. The dial color is the star. And it is a start each time I open my box. And yes, it goes perfectly well with a Tuxedo, just like a red cherry on the black cake.
And now there is this dial color somewhere between silver, white and eggshell, depending on the light:
But honestly, I did not care too much about the dial colour with this watch. I just have wanted to own it since it was launched. The technique the dial is created is astonishing (Oliver wrote a report about this in the GO forum a few weeks ago), but the colour was imoprtant to me only in so far as it is the colour that historic marine chronometers used.
So do I have a preferred dial colour? Well, black was my preferred colour once. But since then I found out that there were too many great options and possibilities as to restrict myself to one. I think that I prefer variety.
Have a great weekend, everybody,
Martin
