Sporting legends and heroes
Sep 07, 2013,07:08 AM
Since we are on the subject of sporting legends, and many have mentioned some legendary racing drivers, I though I would chip in with another British driver, who raced with many of the names mentioned, but is better known to me as my late great father, Arthur Owen.
Probably best known for winning the 1962 British Hill Climb Championship in a Cooper-Climax, Arthur Owen also dabbled in Formula 1, mostly as a private entry. He finished third in the first Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka in 1963 in a Lotus, and qualified for pole in the 1962 Macau Grand Prix. Not such a successful career as a grand prix driver, he went on to break a number of international speed and distance records with Jim Russell and William Knight in a bobtail Cooper at Montlhery and Monza.
And I end with a picture of the first watch I bought after starting my career in the early 90's, along with a copy of the book "The Racing Coopers" by dad, with a forward written by Sir Stirling Moss. Although his prowess as a father was debatable, he was the consummate dapper British gentleman, a womaniser, and most of all, my hero.
Thanks for reading,
Dean Owen
